Services for Alice Nelson Lewis Flower will be held Wednesday, December 28, 2005, 10:00am at the First Presbyterian Church with Pastor Matthew Glasgow officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday, December 27, 2005,6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel. Alice Nelson Lewis Flower was born in Richmond, Virginia to Margaret King Lewis and James Addison Lewis. She was an honor graduate from Presbyterian Collegiate School for Girls in Richmond and a member of the National Honor Society. She married Robert Spencer Flower in Mizpah Presbyterian Church in Richmond on October 15, 1949. She moved to Junction City, Kansas directly after marriage and has resided here since that time. She was the first woman to become a Registered Jeweler with the American Gem Society and the Gemological Institute of America. She and her husband were the first Kansas couple to hold the titles. In connection with their Gemstone and Jewelry Business, she and her husband traveled all over the world and both spoke at National Jewelers' Conventions in the United States. Alice was a host mother to Rolf Krueger, an exchange student from Germany and beloved member of the family.
Mrs. Flower was long associated with the Junction City Little Theater, acting, directing, designing and also wrote the book of their fifty-year history. In conjunction with the Little Theater, Mrs. Flower also wrote a two-hour pageant in celebration of the Junction City Central National Bank's Centennial year.
As a published author and an award-winning member of the Kansas Authors Club since 1995, Alice presided over the Fourth District for four years and edited the Kansas Authors Club Centennial Book, OUR WAY WITH WORDS.
Mrs. Flower taught Sunday School for many years at the Junction City Presbyterian Church. She also served on the Board of Deacons and as an Elder on the Church Session.
Alice was preceded in death by her husband Robert, on June 23, 1999. She is survived by three sons: Robert Spencer Flower, Jr., of Montrose, Colorado, William Gordon Flower of Wichita, Kansas, and Leslie Doyle Flower, of Junction City. Ten grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren also survive.
Alice would like to be remembered for her continuous intellectual curiosity, her common sense and reason, and her sense of humor.
