Alice M. Johnson, 77, of Manhattan, passed away December 24, 2017, at The Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan, Kansas.
A graveside funeral service will be held at Sunset Cemetery on December 29, 2017, at 2:00 pm.
Alice was born in Manhattan to Luke and Roberta (Brown) Starnes on September 17, 1940. She was their fourth daughter. Alice went to high school at Manhattan High School and graduated in 1958.
Not many years after graduating from high school, Alice met and married Earnest Johnson. To this union was born four children, Luke, Earnest, Vonda, and Todd. Alice was employed at Kansas Social Rehabilitation Services, where she worked in various departments until her retirement in 2002. She enjoyed reading romance novels, watching television shows, such as the Amazing Race, Survivor, and CSPAN; mostly she enjoyed visits from her friends and spending time with her family.
Alice professed faith in God. She practiced her belief in the greatest commandment, Matthew 22:18 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' She believed that LOVE was an action word. If you said you loved her or someone, she believed your actions would PROVE it. She was a huge inspiration to many and was loved by many. She had a heart of gold and open arms. She welcomed all who were in need to her home and her heart. She was a no-nonsense, tell it like it is person and to know her was to love her.
Alice is preceded in death by her parents Luke and Roberta Starnes, her sisters, Katherine Barron and Barbara Hanks.
Alice leaves behind to cherish her memory, three sons, Luke Johnson, Manhattan, KS, Ernie Johnson, Manhattan, KS, and Todd Johnson (Danita), Gaithersburg, MD; two daughters, Vonda Poole, Columbia, SC and Cathy Hubbard, Manhattan, KS; one brother, Clifford Starnes (Mabel), Houston TX and one sister, Mae McElroy (Walter), Pittsburgh, PA; eight grandchildren, La'Shea Gayle, Paris Lockhart, Devin Cunningham, Erik Johnson, Don'Trae Johnson, Luke Johnson Jr., Keiondric Poole, Terrance Johnson; ten great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
