Alfonza "Chat" Chatman, Sr., 69, of Junction City, died Saturday, Dec. 19, 2015, at his home. Chat was born Aug. 8, 1946, in Miami, Florida, but moved as a young man with his family to Georgia. Chat attended schools in Madison, Georgia.
Chat was a Vietnam Vet, serving 22 years in the military, and retiring as a SFC in 1995. After his retirement from the military, he worked 20 years for the U.S. Post Office in Topeka.
Chat married Barbara Drew on March 11, 1966, in Ringo, Georgia. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Chatman, a son, Lerenza Chatman, Blue Springs, MO; 2 daughters, Serreana Chatman-Haywood, Junction City, and Talya Chatman, Newport News, VA, 3 brothers, Curtis Chatman and Thomas Chatman, both of Madison, GA, and Alfred Chatman, Atlanta, GA; 3 sisters, Carolyn Chatman and Linda Boswell, both of Madison, GA, and Cathy Chatman, Atlanta, GA; 2 grandchildren, Graigry Chatman and Dana Haywood, both of Junction City; and a great granddaughter, Kianna Thomas-Chatman, Junction City, and other family members. Chat was preceded in death by his parents, and a son, Alfonza Chatman, Jr. in 1997.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2015, at Penwell-Gabel Johnson Funeral Chapel, with Bishop Clarence Williams presiding. Burial will be at Kansas Veterans' Cemetery at Ft. Riley. Military honors will be provided by the U.S. Army Honor Guard from Ft. Riley. The family will greet friends, Tuesday evening, Dec. 22, 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
