It is with a heavy heart that Susan and Albert Curley II of Bowie, Maryland announces the passing of his father, 1SGT Albert Curley (US Army, Retired) who died peacefully on Sunday, September 30, 2018 at Brookdale Senior Living in Junction City, KS. He was 96 years old.
Visitation will be Sunday, October 7, 2018 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, 203 N. Washington Street. Funeral services will be held Monday, October 8, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at the Junction City Church of the Nazarene, 1025 S. Washington Street, Junction City, KS, burial will follow with full military honors at the Kansas Veterans' Cemetery, Manhattan, KS.

1SGT Curley was preceded in death by his loving wife of 74 years, Consuelo D'Alva (Wells) Curley and their Daughter Lorita (Curley) Scott. Born in Helena, Arkansas he was the second eldest son of Agostino Onorato and Spencer Elvia Curley. 1SGT Curley leaves his younger Brother August Onorato Curley of Georgia to mourn his passing as well as his grandchildren: Christine (Curley) Weaver, Marc Scott, Michael Scott, Andrea Scott, Albert Curley III, Alexander Curley, Jennifer Miles and Adam Paul. He also leaves behind numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.
1SGT Albert Curley was one of the last surviving Buffalo Soldier (9th Horse Cavalry) troopers. He worked tirelessly with four other local troopers to raise funds for the life-sized monument at Pawnee Park, now known as Buffalo soldier Park in Junction City, Kansas. He served as Treasurer of the National Buffalo Soldier Association for more than a decade.
Trooper Curley enlisted in the US Army in 1940 and met the most beautiful woman he had ever seen, and the love of his life, Consuelo Wells at the Junction City USO Club. 1SGT Curley served in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. His sound decision and brave actions were known to save countless lives. 1SGT Curley was seriously wounded in WWII for which he was awarded a Purple Heart and the Bronze Star for bravery. Trooper Curley was a recipient of the Audie Murphy award.
In later years 1SGT Curley spoke to Army Personnel, universities, authors and was interviewed by the international and local press about life in the segregated military. After his retirement from the Army, he was a supervisor of the Produce Department at the Junction City Safeway grocery store.
Trooper Curley was Knighted into the Honorable Order of Saint George. He was a fine gentleman, a loving an honorable man who will be missed by many.
