Alan C. Stephen of Junction City, Kansas passed from this life on Monday, August 13, 2012 in the Geary Community Hospital at the age of 81.

He was born to Clarence and Iva Stephen on January 21, 1931. He was born in Groton, S.D. but spent most of his youth in York, Nebraska. He graduated from York High School in 1949. He entered the US Navy in 1950 and served four years.

He was married to Marilyn Jean Gerken on July 31, 1951 in York, Nebraska. Four children were born of this union. Dennis Stephen and his wife, Kathleen, now reside in Chicago, Illinois; Deborah Schmitz and her husband, Robert live in Katy Texas; and Diane Wells resides in Crofton, Maryland. Son, Duane, preceded him in death in 1982. Alan was very proud of his children and grandchildren. Granddaughters Kara Voorheis, Ashley Schmitz, and Julianne Schmitz reside in Houston, Texas. Grandsons, Mark Stephen and Eric Stephen, reside in Tulsa, OK and granddaughter, Rebecca Vana resides in Chicago, Ill. Granddaughter, Loni Wells, resides in Manhattan, Kansas

He is also survived by two brothers: Homer Stephen of Lincoln, Nebraska; Donald Stephen of Brighton, Colorado and two sisters, Dorothy Toombs of Gresham, Ne. and Helen Neilsen of Yankton, S. D. Two brothers and three sisters preceded him in death.

Alan is a member of the American Legion in Junction City, Kansas; he was a former scout leader and Little League ball coach. He has been a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Junction City, Kansas since 1962.

Alan's career was in Federal Civil Service and retired from Ft. Riley, Kansas in 1982. He held various part-time jobs till 1993.

Funeral services will be held in the Immanuel Lutheran Church, 630 South Eisenhower on Friday, August 17 at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery. Family will receive callers at the Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel, 203 N. Washington Street on Thursday, August 16, 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Memorials may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church ,630 South Eisenhower Street, Junction City, Kansas or to the Johnson Cancer Research Center, 1 Chalmers Hall, Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kansas 66506.
